The Pu Luong Nature Reserve is an area of outstanding beauty, cultural interest and biodiversity. Stretching from Mai Chau in the northwest and to Cuc Phuong National Park in the southeast. The region is blessed with rich forest, limestone mountains, magnificent rice terraces and breathtaking scenery. Biking in Pu Luong is one of the best ways to discover the natural beauty of the region and exotic culture of minority groups. On this biking tour we will ride on the first part of the historic Ho Chi Minh Trail and spend 3 nights in villages of Thai people.

Day 1: Overland to Mai Chau/Biking to Pu Luong (Hang Village)
Leave Hanoi at 8 am. We drive southwest to Ma Chau, the gateway to the impressive mountainous area of northern Vietnam. The drive is very nice with stunning view of mountains, valleys, sugarcane farms and rice paddies. We would have a stop en route for refreshment. Upon arrival in Mai Chau we have a lunch stop in Pom Coong, a village of Thai ethnic minority. We will have lunch in a local house. After lunch we embark on a biking on village road to Hin, a village of Thai minority group which is located within Pu Luong Nature Reserve. We will first bike on beautiful tar road through Mai Chau valley before jumping into undulating dirt paths. We reach Hang Village around 5 pm. We will have dinner and overnight in a traditional stilt-house of a Thai family.

Day 2: Climbing mountain slopes to Hin Village
Today is a tough day with long climb on mix of dirt paths and village roads. In the morning we climb mainly. In the afternoon we enjoy easier ride slightly downhill to Hin, a village of Thai minority. Great mountain view and scenic villages. Lunch in local house en route. Dinner and overnight in Hin village.

Day 3: Downhill ride to Canh Nang Town/Transfer to Mai Chau
After breakfast we say good bye to the villagers and ride toward Ma River passing expansive maize fields. Near the river we would see many water wheels which used by the local to water their farms. We cross the river on bridge and have lunch in Canh Nang town. After lunch we can continue biking along Ma River or take the bus back to Mai Chau. Dinner and overnight in Pom Coong Village.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL – HANOI
On arrival at Noi Bai Airport, you are met and transferred to hotel. Ha Noi , Vietnam’s capital, is a stylish and gracious city that retains an unique old world charm and some Asia’s most striking colonial architecture. The many lakes and parks make for relaxing atmosphere. (If time permit ) we enjoy a short cyclo excursion through the bustling old quarter streets named after the specific goods once offered for sale at these places. O/N in Ha Noi.(B)

DAY  2: HANOI
The sightseeing tour of Hanoi begins with Ho Chi Minh Complex, containing the mausoleum of the nation’s founder Ho Chi Minh, the Presidential Palace , Ho Chi Minh’s house on stilts. The complex also comprises the One Pillar Pagoda, whose origins date back to the foundation of city. We follow this with a trip to the Temple of Literature well known as Vietnam’s first university and the History Museum which displays an excellent collection of artifacts illustrating the Vietnamese history. A next stop  is the impressive Ethnologic Museum, dedicated to Vietnam’s 54 ethnic minorities, some of which we will see on our forthcoming days. We also visit the peaceful lake of Hoan Kiem  and the vibrant Dong Xuan Market before we enjoy a performance of Hanoi’s famous water puppets. O/N in Hanoi. (B)

DAY 3: HANOI – DIEN BIEN PHU
An impressive way of commencing our day is a walk around Hoan Kiem Lake at dawn, where hundreds of people  come to do their morning exercise (optional). After breakfast we will have free time until we board a short flight taking us over mountainous regions to Dien Bien Phu, the site of the decisive battle in Vietnam’s struggle for independence in 1954. After checking into our central located hotel we  enjoy a walk around to see this fast growing town. Our  main stop  is Dien Bien Phu’s Museum which details the event in place. We also pay a visit to the old battle field where the lush vegetation grows behind many war relics including old French tanks and artillery pieces. O/N in Dien Bien Phu .(B,L,D)

DAY  4: DIEN BIEN PHU – LAI CHAU
Upon leaving Dien Bien, the roads begins to deteriorate, but drive offer some fantastic views and interesting visit to many hill villages linked to the road which is the main artery of trade between the northeastern region. After a half day travelling we arrive in Lai Chau Town, our base for exploring the surrounding areas. As a highlight of the trip we  board a boat for a short trip on the mighty Da River, passing through the stunning mountain landscapes. The pace is very relaxed, a perfect way to observe the local lifestyle close up. Afterwards we have free time to explore the town and pack for trekking days. O/N in Lai Chau. (B,L,D)

DAY  5: LAI CHAU – TA CO PINH
The remote and extremely beautiful mountain region of Lai Chau is ideal for anyone seeking a true adventure and trekking expedition. This morning we  take short drive before we set off on a full day trekking, using the local path. Along the way we  cross over several hill villages which are populated by the  Hmong  and Dao ethnic minority people, just some of Vietnam’s most colorful ethnic minority groups. They have settled there long time ago. O/N at Ta Co Ping village. (B,L,D)

DAY  6: TA CO PINH – NAM PE
Today we get well and truly off the beaten track as we trek into this mountainous region. We walk through different villages, and are sure to attract attention as this part of the country receives very few visitors. The trek usually takes around 7 hours and is quite steep in places,  but views of the scenery are fantastic. We finish our walking day on arrival at Nam Pe Ping village where we are  guest of a Thai family. The accommodation is very simple and dormitory style, no western facilities. O/N at  Nam Pe village. DAY  7: NAM PE – PA HA
The exciting walk begins as we depart our village of previous night and follow the path used by local people. At the small village of Nam Trang, we change our pace while we embark on a boat for a leisurely trip down stream to Pa Ha, our final destination for this evening. On arrival we have time to take a wander around this seldom visited  village, enabling us to understand a little more about their  culture and lifestyle. O/N in Pa Ha village. (B,L,D)

DAY  8: PA HA – PUSAMCAP
An early morning start to ascend the Pu Sam Cap Mount. The trekking will be difficult at times with many steep uphill walking, but  the verdant and rugged mountain scenery combined with the colorful local population makes for an unforgettable experience. After a full day walking we arrive at Pu Sam Cap. This remote village is conquered by the Hmong hill tribe people. They are very poor, but have an interesting history and a colorful culture. DAY 9: PU SAM CAP – DONG PAO
The scenery of the north is unequalled although conditions are very basic. After breakfast we continue venturing into this beautiful region with the next stop being Dong Pao. The trekking is less arduous as we walk downhill. Along the way we encounter the local villagers going about their daily business such as logging, herding buffalo, tilling the field. They are the Lao, Lu, Hmong or Dao, who still retain their age old cultural traditions and are recognisably distinct from each other by their dress. O/N in Dong Pao village. (B,L,D)

DAY 10: DONG PAO – BAN BO
Heading out of Dong Pao we continue our trek, using the local track, passing the undulating terrains and some rustic villages which are home to numerous ethnic minorities. A part of the pleasure of trekking in this region is the  joy of seeing the mountain landscape and exploring the interesting culture of the people. We arrive at Ban Bo village late afternoon and spend the night, as guest of villagers. The facilities are very basic, but the experience is unique. O/N in Ban Bo village. (B,L,D)

DAY  11: BANBO  – THAN THUOC  – SAPA
The trekking expeditions finishes this morning after we spend  few more hours completing  the distance from Ban Bo to Than Thuoc. At the small village we meet up with our vehicle and drive to Sa Pa. At an elevation of 1,500 meters, Sapa was founded in the early years of the last century as a hill resort for French administrators when the heat on the plain became unbearable. Here are some remains of colonial period and many colorful ethnic minority groups. After checking into hotel, you can soak up the fresh climate as much as you want by spending your time strolling around this charming town. O/N in SaPa. (B,L,D)

DAY 12: SAPA  – HANOI
The Phan Si Pang range boasts Vietnam’s highest mountain and lends an alpine feel to the area surrounding this hill station. After breakfast we explore the bustling Sa Pa Market where the Red Dao, Black Hmong, Tay, Xa Pho ethnic minorities converge from the surrounding the mountainsides and valleys to trade their goods and buy provisions. We follow this with a walk into this mountainous region. Departing the town we get well off the beaten track and pass through many hill villages and beautiful mountain landscape. In the mid afternoon you are transferred to Laocai to board a night train back to Hanoi. O/N on board. (B)

DAY  13: HANOI – HALONG
An early morning arrival in Hanoi. We enjoy a shower before we travel by roads to Halong Bay, truly one of Vietnam’s most scenic impressive sights. AWe make stop en route in Hai Phong, the biggest port town of northern Vietnam. This charming town has plenty of interesting sights, some of which are  the Hang Kenh Communal House, the Du Hang Pagoda,  the Hang Kenh Carpet Factory and the vibrant Sat Market. A drive through tree lined boulevards punctuated with many striking French colonial architecture, will deliver us to some of these landmarks. We continue our journey Halong Bay and spend the remainder of the day for a well – earned rest on Bai Chay Beach. O/N in Ha Long. (B)

DAY  14: HALONG – HANOI
The legendary Ha Long Bay is truly one of Vietnam’s most impressive scenic sights. Today we embark on a sailing boat for a four hour cruise around this wondrous bay, dotted with some 3,000 limestone islands rising amazingly from the clear and emerald water. The limestone karst formations are littered with beaches, grottoes and beautiful caves. Along the way we will anchor for a leisurely swim in a secluded cove and an enjoyable visit to one of the many hidden grottoes beneath towering cliffs. After a seafood lunch on board we  return to Ha Noi, arriving in time to see an evening performance of Ha Noi’s famous water puppets. O/N in Ha Noi. (B,L)

DAY  15: HANOI – DEPARTURE

The two great metropolises of the country are the elegant capital city, Hanoi, and the dynamic, economic powerhouse, Ho Chi Minh City. Hanoi is located in the north of the country and Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, is in the south. Most visitors to Vietnam start their travels from one of these two cities.

An overnight train journey to the north of Hanoi is Sapa, home to Vietnam’s highest mountains and colourful ethnic minorities. To the east of Hanoi is the spectacular natural wonder and UNESCO World Heritage Site that is Halong Bay with its thousands of limestone islands jutting out of the emerald green bay.

Hue, the former imperial capital under the Nguyen Dynasty, is a short flight south of Hanoi and a scenic three-hour drive from Hue leads to the historic trading port of Hoi An.

Vietnam’s premier beach destination is Nha Trang on the south central coast. Other beach resorts can be found at Hoi An, Quy Nhon and Phan Thiet. The former colonial hill station of Dalat is a few hours’ drive inland from Nha Trang while in the southernmost part of the country where the Mekong river empties into the ocean is the Mekong Delta, known as Vietnam’s rice basket.

Day 2: Hanoi City Tour [B/ L / - ]
AM: 8h00 Pick up from your hotel, start of the tour journey visit by coach trip along the Hanoi Old Quarter. After that we take you to visit Ho Chi Minh complex, including Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum – the final resting place of Vietnamese great father or uncle Ho, President Ho Chi Minh’s stilt house- where Ho livedon and off from 1958 to 1969, then visit Ho Chi Minh’s museum, Where tourists will learn what he has done for Viet Nam and some other countries and learn all kinds of information about President Ho Chi Minh. The next place to move to is One Pillar Pagoda – a group of structures consisting of a pagoda and a tower built in the middle of a square lake. Leave One Pillar Pagoda for the Temple of Literature – the first college of Viet Nam and the place dedicating to Confucian. Have lunch at a restaurant. O/N in Ha Noi PM: After having lunch, drive to visit Tran Quoc Pagoda, Which is on the shore of West Lake. Day 3: Hanoi – Train Victoria to Sapa [B/ - / - ]
You will be able to enjoy a free day of leisure in the colonial city Hanoi. You may like to visit the bustling, narrow streets of the Old Quarter, or perhaps opt for some cultural sights by viewing some of Hanoi’s many museums, in particular the Museum of Ethnology dedicated to Vietnam’s 54 ethnic minority peoples. Perhaps you could visit Hoa Lo prison, formerly known by its inmates as ‘The Hanoi Hilton’. Some of its more notable guests included Senator John McCain and Douglas Peterson, the first post-war US Ambassador to Vietnam . You could stroll around the French quarter where many of the Embassies are located. Maybe a shopping expedition in the old quarter or just relaxing around one of the many parks and lakes that helps to make Hanoi one of the greenest cities in Asia. Your trip to Sapa starts with an overnight train journey from Vietnam’s capital city to the border town of Lao Cai . The luxury Victoria Express departs at 22:00 p.m.

Day 4: Sapa [B/ - / - ]
The train arrives at the Lao Cai train station at approximately 06:00. There will be a vehicle waiting to transfer us to Sapa. The drive to Sapa is only 33 km but it takes around 1.5 hours. Once at Sapa, we will check into the Victoria Hotel in order to freshen up, and have breakfast at TaVan Restaurant in the hotel and then enjoy a free morning to explore around town. Aftert 10 a.m. pickup from the hotel, there will be a walking tour to the hill tribe villages of Cat Cat, home to the Black H’mong minority peoples. As we walk to the villages nestled in the valley below Sapa, we will meet some of the local minority people on their way to and from Sapa. Day 5: Sapa – Hanoi [B/ L / - ]
Following breakfast, we explore the Sapa Sunday market and then set out on our 3-4 hour trek that will take us along buffalo paths and trails and through several hill tribe villages of Lao Chai and Ta Van, home to H’mong, and Dzay people. This is an absolutely spectacular walk through stunning scenery inhabited by some of the friendliest people you can meet. We will stop for a picnic lunch on the way to Ta Van village. This afternoon we transfer back to Lao Cai for the Victoria Express train journey back to Hanoi . The train departs at 21:15.

Day 6: Hanoi – Ha Long Bay [B/ L / D ]
Arrive in Hanoi at around 5 am in the morning. Pick up from here, transfer to Restaurant and we go through the scenic countryside. The wondrous Halong Bay is truly one of Vietnam’s most impressive scenic sights. Heading out of the town we embark on a boat for an exploration of the legendary Halong Bay. This exciting five hour cruise will provide us a fantastic view of the picturesque scenery blending with the sky and some 3,000 limestone islands rising amazingly from the clear and emerald water. The limestone karsts formations are littered with beaches, grottoes and beautiful caves. Waking up and having breakfast served onboard. Continue cruising around the bay. Take sampan to visit Luon Cave and come back to the boat. This tour offers you true meaning of adventure. Starting with hydrofoil trip to Cat Ba Island, we have some time to enjoy the quiet town with beautiful beaches, fine sea food and beer. The next day is a big challenge since we trek through jungle and have a chance to see the panorama of Halong Bay from one of the mountain summits we would conquer during the trek. After the trek we camp on a quiet beach to round up an adventure day. The next day is great paddling time, as you will paddle our unique route to explore Lan Ha Bay and continue to Halong Bay where we will spend the last night on a deluxe overnight junk. This tour offers flexibility in activity levels while still combining the best of sea kayaking. It is a good tour for both novice and experienced kayaker alike with a little more time to spare.

Detail Itinerary

Day 1: Hanoi – Hai Phong – Cat Ba Island [../ L / D ]
5:30 – Depart from your hotel in Hanoi for Hai Phong City then take express boat to Cat Ba Island; arrive in Cat Ba Island at about 10:00am. Transfer across the island to the dock and board a small boat to Cruise to our private base camp. You’ll enjoy a lunch of savory fresh local sea food. After lunch your guide will give you full instruction on the gear and safety, show you the basic paddle strokes and tell you about your paddling route. Then he’ll gear you up for an afternoon of exploration! Return back to the base camp for a fresh water shower and a great dinner before retiring to your cozy hut for the night.

Day2: Whole day kayaking [B / L/ D ]

Whole day paddling and exploring the Bay at your own pace, while having a closer look at the amazing karsts. You’ll explore some of the many caves that lead to stunning lagoons, paddle to some floating villages to see this unique way of life, and stop to chill out at one of the many beaches here. You’ll be met by a support boat which you’ll board to enjoy lunch before you continue paddling in the afternoon. Cruise back to the base camp for dinner. Enjoy another relaxing night at the base camp.

Day 3: Bay Kayaking – Cat Ba Island – Hai Phong – Hanoi [B / L/ .. ]
Our base camp is staffed by friendly locals who’ll cook you up a hardy breakfast before you head out for the morning to explore more of the amazing karst limestone formations and grottos. Return to the base camp for lunch where you can relax on the beach, throw around the Frisbee and take a swim. Cruise back to Cat Ba Island, ferry to Hai Phong then drive to Hanoi; arrive about 7:30pm. Trip ends in Hanoi.

Note:
the camping can be on the deserted beach with double tent or at ready-set-up basecamp (also on beach) with bamboo hut depending on the weather condition and availability.
we use private support boat when paddling to explore hidden and untouristy corners of Halong Bay.
